Because We Can – Because We Care (Bwc2 ) is a nonprofit that rescues, rehabilitates and reprograms horses.

The group rescues horses that were neglected, unwanted and/or bound for slaughter. These rescued horses show many similar symptoms of PTSD and situational awareness.

Veterans that have become qualified in Trust, Confidence and Respect (TCR) Horsemanship will have the opportunity to help other Veterans by teaching them the same tools and techniques they have learned.

After their horses have completed the rehabilitation process, they are utilized in their Special Needs & Disabled Children’s Program

Bwc2 is 100% volunteer staffed and always open for more volunteers ages 16 and up.

The discussion includes the silver tsunami and shortage of In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) personnel, who provide personal care and domestic services to persons who are aged, blind or disabled and who live in their own homes. IHSS is provided to those who otherwise might be placed in an out-of-home care facility but who can safely remain in their own home if IHSS services are received.

The Silver Tsunami (also known as The Grey Tsunami or Gray Tsunami) is a metaphor used to describe population aging and in the context of this discussion refers to the rising amount of seniors who need care.

Ventura County’s farms and ranches employ nearly 36,000 men and women. These farm workers are critical to Ventura County’s agricultural industry.

When farm workers and their families live in safe, decent and affordable housing, their children are healthier and do better in school. Families experience less stress, and can devote more resources to food, clothing, health care and other needs.

Employees in secure housing provide a more stable and dependable work force for one of the county’s most important industries.

Neighborhoods are improved when substandard, overcrowded housing is replaced by well-designed, properly maintained homes that provide adequate parking and dedicated play areas.

Ventura Unified School District Superintendent, David Creswell, speaks with Sandra Siepak about the Thomas Fire challenges and ongoing school safety concerns.

Creswell notes that Ventura schools were out for 5 weeks as a result of the Thomas Fire: 3 weeks for instruction and 2 weeks for winter break.

The school administration endeavored to serve a balance of needs expressed by parents who wanted to get their kids back in school as soon as possible and other parents who wanted to ensure the schools were settled and safe enough for their kids to return.

Creswell also discusses school safety, touching upon training, drills, school site-assessments and the costs of increased security.

Superintendent Creswell oversees 27 schools and in this discussion he also outlines his leadership style.

The fund supports more housing choices, by generating and leveraging financial resources, working in partnership with the public, private, and non-profit sectors throughout Ventura County.

They help fund housing for low to moderate income families and individuals. Priority will be given to projects that create housing opportunities for:

* Veterans
* Youth Transitioning out of Foster Care
* Homeless Individuals and Families
* Farm Workers
* Very-low Income

The Ventura County Housing Trust Fund became a 501c3 non-profit corporation in March of 2012, and is funded through a number of sources: local government contributions; State of California Housing Bond Funds approved by the voters; grants from foundations and businesses; and from individual donations and special events such as HOME’s annual Ventura County Housing Conference.
